HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Belt Fed Magic or Semi-Auto Tragic?

Welcome everyone to the 71st edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the white tiger stripe desert eagle was just fudd crap.

This Auction is for a very rare Colt 6940 LE Restricted Monolithic Rifle chambered in 5.56 that has had the Slidefire Belt Fed Rifle (BFR) conversion, so it feeds from the standard M249 (M27) Links. This rifle is being sold as used but was only test-fired to make sure it works by the customer. The reason he is selling it is because he has two of them…. This rifle also features a Geissele trigger and Magpul furniture. All in all, this is a very unique opportunity to get into the belt fed game without having to pony up the insane beltfed machine gun prices. https://thearmsguide.com/11697/slide-fire-belt-fed-rifle-shot-show/

I did a little digging and wasn’t able to find a ton of information on these Slide Fire-BFR belt feds.  Clearly, the gun no longer has the Slide Fire or Bump Fire ability.  The guns did appear at SHOT Show multiple times, but it looks like the company might have subsequently vanished.  The design itself was interesting (note link chute next to AR mag release) and I’d be curious to see how well it worked.

Belt-fed machine guns commonly use a hinged top cover that allows for faster reloading as well as clearing malfunctions.  While I think all belt-fed machine guns are awesome, clearing jams or removing stuck links with this design just seems tedious.  Between that, a lack of hot-swappable barrels, and available cheaper options like the FightLite MCR and I don’t see how this is a good idea.

The collectors market always drives its own price, but at just shy of $8,000 I think you have to be a die-hard enthusiast to want this.  However, I could be wrong.  The gun is built on sought after (albeit overpriced) Colt parts and could be a collector’s item now or in the future.  So is the gun worth it for the price or is just another overpriced semi-auto belt fed?  As always, I leave it up to you the reader to decide.
