HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Competitive or Confusing Browning Hi Power?

Welcome everyone to the 72nd edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the belt-fed converted Colt was actually fudd crap.

At this time the original auction remains up while the belt-fed converted Colt awaits a new home.  We hope it finds a new home next to a pile of M27 NATO links here soon.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a Browning Hi Power GP Competition. As is tradition, this extra-long Browning is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $2,199.99 with No Reserve.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“Long gat is long” – Matt M.

“Hot Gat, though the price is slightly high” – Rusty S.

“I’m gonna go with ‘hot gat’, but I’d have thought that $2000 would get you a better looking grip.” – Doug E.

“Trending toward hot gat, but looks a bit like a prototype Beretta that took a bucketful of male enhancement pills.” – Will P.

The Hi Power GP Competition was a variant of the legendary Browning Hi Power and was imported during the mid to late ’80s. This model featured a refined trigger, adjustable sights, as well as a barrel mounted counterweight (you can see in the above photo). It’s all very functional but does appear a bit strange at first glance.

In order to extend the sight radius further, the GP Comp used the counterweight as the mounting point for the front sight.  While this does give the gun a giant 7.56″ sight radius, it does open door to potential problems.  As this counterweight was secured by an Allen screw, you’d better hope you remembered to apply the correct type and color Loctite.

The Hi Power GP competition seems a gun I would love to own but would be reluctant to shoot.  The Browning Hi Power has always had a sort of cult following, and it’s a shame these didn’t become as popular as the 1911/2011 series firearms.  Maybe I’m mistaken though, and there’s a reason these aren’t as popular.  So is it worth it for the price?  As always I leave it up to you, the reader, to decide.
