HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Hard Charger or Why Even Bother?

Welcome everyone to the 74th Edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the Old Glory themed .38 Special was pure fudd crap.

At this time the gun has been re-listed on GunBroker, with the asking price moved up from $400 to $450.  Apparently, this seller doesn’t think this gun has lost any of its glory.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a custom side charging AR pistol. As is tradition, this super short AR is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $2,350 Buy It Now.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“If I wanted to nerf rounds sideways at targets… I’d just buy a Franklin Armory.” – Adam S.

“So short it won’t matter how you use it…” – Giorgio O.

“Look, it’s fine, if you want a flamethrower – just say that.” – Will P.

“Spartan helmet not included. Oh wait.” – Pete

Selling this ultra-compact gat is GunBroker seller tarjanryan, located in Canyon Lake TX.  Let’s see what they had to say about this custom build.

For those who have yet to experience a super short unsuppressed AR-15 (especially indoors), trust me they’re awful.  Personal Defense Weapons or PDW’s always look cool in photos but certainly lose their luster very quickly in a practical setting. 5.56/.223 was never optimal for short barrels, and the result is a gun that’s very loud with a lot of lost performance.

To me, this looks like a “build” that was put together to fill a PDW role, but while steering clear of that high PDW price tag.  Makes sense, until you look at the asking price.  Sure these are strange times, and yeah I bet the builder spent a good chunk of change on this build.  However, I don’t think this is worth $2,350.

Side charging AR’s have always been intriguing to me.  On the other hand, I have plenty of standard AR parts, so I’ve never felt the need to mess with one personally.  So, is all of this really worth it for the price, or is this destined to roam GunBroker forever?  As always, I leave it up to you, the reader, to decide.
