I recently wrote about how it is taking Detroit citizens almost a year to get an appointment with the Wayne County Clerk to apply for their concealed pistol license. This has understandably forced many legally armed citizens to open carry as the laws permit this. However, just recently a 53-year-old man had his pistol stolen off of him while he was in a gas station while he was open carrying.

According to the local news report, the criminal who stole the handgun simply walked up behind the victim and snatched the pistol right out of his holster. This is based on CCTV footage that was recorded inside the gas station. Right after stealing the handgun, the perpetrator pointed the handgun at the man he just stole it from and then proceeded to run away. Thankfully the man who stole the pistol was caught and arrested for other unrelated criminal activities before the notice for information was even put out.

The man who had his pistol stolen probably didn’t have a holster with active retention which is probably why it was so easily snatched from his possession. I can’t independently verify that the holster of the victim didn’t have active retention but Detroit Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt seems to also think the holster didn’t have any type of retention.

If you want to open carry that’s on you but you gotta have weapon retention. “From what I can see, he just walks up from behind and snatches it. the perpetrator must have seen something and said this guy’s not paying attention.

(emphasis mine throughout)

In this day and age I don’t believe the police are any less threat of having their weapons stolen off of them as the man from this story was but the clear difference here is that the man who had his gun stolen was not only not paying attention, he was also not using the proper equipment for this application. That is all in addition to the fact that you’re presenting yourself as a high-priority target for crimes of opportunity like what took place.

All that being said, I really can’t blame some of the citizens of Detroit for wanting to arm themselves in any legal way they can. When you’re faced with a long wait to even apply for your concealed pistol permit would you accept the wait and go unarmed or would you rather arm yourself up and risk becoming a target? If you lived and worked in Detroit and wanted to open carry how would you do it? Looking forward to the comments down below.
